NLR Parks and RecreationScout Projects

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have always had a place in Burns Park. There are many opportunities for Eagle Scout and Gold Award projects.

When selecting a project in Burns Park, or any one of our other parks, you need to choose a project based on your interest(s) and its benefit to the park. We have a selection of projects to choose from, but it is not a exhaustive list. If you have a different project in mind, contact us to discuss it. Once you decide on a project or concept for a project, please complete the Concept Form and return it to us.

Potential Projects (updated August 23, 2022)
  1. Build a wall/pavilion to list all of the Eagle projects done at Burns Park. (Good Eagle Leadership Project)
  2. Put in benches on Pfeifer Loop trail. (Good Eagle Leadership Project)
  3. Make archery range accessible by adding ADA accessible ways to retrieve arrows from targets and a paved shooting line. (Good Eagle Leadership Project)
  4. Create a series of Nature Identification Signs (plants and/or animals) on trails
  5. Update and rework the Burns Park Hiking Trail Patch website and requirements.
  6. Reblaze the Yellow Trail in Burns Park and out to Pfeifer Loop
  7. Create a series of food plots for the deer population (Good Eagle Leadership Project)
  8. Create kid-friendly self-guided trail tours along selected trails. Include some type of a scavenger hunt, checklist, question/answer, etc. that would lead to an award (bandana, water bottle, etc.) similar to the Boy Scout Patch for those kids who complete the activity.
  9. Put up directional signs along the trail and/or in the trailheads (Good Eagle Leadership Project).
  10. Create nature programs for school groups (mammals, reptiles, river ecology, trees, etc)
  11. Put up tree identification signs for education purpose on Pfeifer Loop and at Covered Bridge.
  12. Put in benches along the Green and/or Red Trails (Good Eagle Leadership Project)
  13. Eradicate invasive non-native plant species near the trails and trailheads
  14. Armor drainage/springs that hold water on the trails.
  15. Upgrade and maintain the trailheads and amenities.
  16. Adopt a section of trail for continuous maintenance. All trails are available.
    1. Yellow Trail would be a great project. That trail is very popular, but it needs a lot of work. This could be several unit projects linked together.
  17. Calculate and mark mileage for the loop trails (Good Eagle Leadership Project)
    1. Green Trail was done for an Eagle project. That project was done well, but it pointed out we need to do it differently. The format for markers is changing.
  18. Put up benches on the paved White Oak Bayou Trail in the soccer complex. (Good Eagle Leadership Project)
  19. Adopt one of the Trail Heads and turn it into a show case for the park. (Long-term, multiple projects.)
  20. We have other projects that come and go, and we can discuss other projects that Scout units or Eagle candidates would like to propose. We’re flexible!
Previous Projects
  • Creation and Installation of a Junior Disc Golf Course
  • Two Pavilions at the Soccer Complex along the Arkansas River Trail
  • Elevated Walkway across a creek on the Green Loop Trail near the Group Camping Area
